The itc AI Unit Planner

ITC Thinkdrive on a unit-planner

How does it work?

The itc AI Unit Planner will produce a week-by-week outline for your unit in moments. You will need to complete five (5) fields:

  • Field 1: Year level
  • Field 2: Learning Area e.g., English, Science
  • Field 3: Number of Weeks allocated to the unit
  • Field 4: Unit Topic e.g., Narratives, Forces, Rational numbers
  • Field 5: Content – state the specific content that will be studied throughout the unit

How do I create quality AI unit plans?

In Field 5, the more detailed the content, the better your unit plan. Ensure you state all the content that you are required to cover from the relevant syllabus.

Does the itc AI Unit Planner suggest any assessment activities?

Yes! The unit plan will offer a suggested final assessment activity. However, if you already have your final assessment item created, state this in Field 5 (the Content field). The generated unit plan should work towards this assessment item, especially in the final weeks of the unit.

How do I customise the unit plan?

The unit plan will require customisation. Here is a suggested format:

Step 1. Start by checking the end point

All good unit plans start with the end-point in mind. In other words, devise the final summative assessment and check backwards from there. What does the learning “look like” at the end and how will your students demonstrate what they have learned?

Ideally, this checking process will be a collaborative effort by the team of teachers preparing to teach the same unit.

Step 2. Check the skills

Does the unit plan cover the skills required of the course? Refer to the relevant Achievement Standards. For example, the assessment may be required to address at least some of the following:

  • Describe the effects of...
  • Explain responses and strategies to address...
  • Explain the relationship between...
  • Develop relevant questions about...
  • Collect, organise and represent relevant data...
  • Interpret and analyse data and information...
  • Decide on appropriate strategies...
  • Create descriptions, responses and explanations...

Step 3. Check the curriculum content

With reference to the relevant syllabus, ensure the unit plan covers the content to be taught. You can then select the aspects of the curriculum that you want to assess for formative and summative purposes.

Step 4. Check the week-by-week plan

Ensure the unit plan provides an overview of the learning experiences that students need to undertake to complete the summative task successfully and to fulfil the curriculum intent. Ideally, the unit plan should sit between the school-work program and your individual lesson plans and acts as a ‘road map’ for the unit of work.

Step 5. Monitoring student progress using formative assessment

As students work towards the final assessment you need to monitor progress towards the learning goals of the unit of work and provide timely, constructive and useful feedback to students. Targeted, formative assessment implemented at key junctures in the unit plan will enable you to do this. It is assumed that you will do this informally in your lessons, however it is also worthwhile including thoughtful formative assessment strategies that all teachers will implement to ensure consistent delivery of the curriculum.

The end of each learning experience is a key juncture where implementing formative assessment will enable you to monitor both the effectiveness of your teaching and the level of student understanding or skill development. Thoughtful formative assessment strategies are designed to enhance learning and enable students to understand how they learn (i.e., develop their metacognition). Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Sharing learning intentions and the criteria for success
  • Engineering effective classroom discussions and other tasks that elicit evidence of student understanding
  • Providing feedback that moves the learner forward
  • Activating students as instructional resources for each other (peer instruction and peer assessment)
  • Activating students to be responsible for their own learning (self-assessment)
